Ann Petry and Connecticut
Waterford RISE is a proud champion of the work and genius of Ann Petry, the First African American woman to publish over a million copies of a book. Born in Old Saybrook, Connecticut, Petry also published such classics as Country Place, The Narrows, Tituba of Salem Village, Miss Muriels and Other Stories, and Harriet Tubman: Conductor of the Underground Railroad. With the support of advocacy of RISE, the state of Connecticut now declares May 10th as Ann Petry Day.
