The REAL History of Enslavement in our Local Area – November 9th, 2024
This event took place at the Waterford Public Library and treated the audience to enlightening local history. Historian Lonnie Braxton and Waterford RISE member Paul Helvig shared their groundbreaking views on the history of slavery in Southeastern Connecticut. Attendees heard compelling, deep-reaching stories regarding slavery in the Waterford area; these were told through tales of the enslaved people of Waterford, such as those enslaved by John Rogers, and also of the tragic fate of young Hannah Occuish, whose judicial execution was unparalleled in history as the execution of the youngest person in the United States. The burial sites of enslaved people in Waterford were also discussed, as well as the lingering imprint of this dark chapter in the town’s history. Insightful discussions, delicious local treats, and free child care enabled meaningful reflection and discussion of our past and how it will impact the future.
